Among the most common pathologies that affect the dog's pancreas, we can differentiate 2 predominant ones: pancreatitis, as inflammation of the pancreas, and loss of functional mass, EPI or exocrine pancreatic insufficiency.
EPI in dogs is a much more widespread pathology than thought. It consists of the inability of the pancreas to secrete an adequate quantity of enzymes due to the loss of functional mass, which makes normal digestion of proteins, fats and carbohydrates difficult or impossible.
Due to its nature, it can lead to a state of malnutrition and makes good digestibility of nutrients and adequate levels of them necessary. Relating this, we observe that the main symptoms of a dog affected by EPI are an increase in the volume of stools and their frequency (generally soft, steatorrhea); an increase in appetite but with loss of weight and muscle mass, as well as a dull coat, among many other very disparate symptoms. This could lead to changes in behavior, vomiting, dermatological problems...
It is common to consider that the appropriate diet for the treatment of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency must contain a high digestibility of nutrients and an adapted level of fat, this is due to the difficulty of lipids to be assimilated, in addition to a lower level of fibers than a common recipe.
On the use of probiotics in the diet of pancreatic patients, whether pancreatitis, especially acute or EPI, there are previous studies that suggest improvements in the quality of life of the animal, although they still require further research. As a result, Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency generates intestinal dysbiosis and treatment with antibiotics is another agent that can affect gastrointestinal health, so the use of probiotics is recommended.
As a potentially fatal disease, we recommend good professional guidance from your veterinarian with, probably, supplementation with pancreatic enzymes and in some cases with cobalamin.
