Osteoarthritis is one of the main consultations faced by veterinary practice, with around 25% of the canine population suffering from some type of arthritis. It is a chronic disease, often collateral to other orthopedic diseases such as dysplasia or osteochondritis, although it can occur without the previous appearance of these diseases since the predisposition due to age, genetics or overweight is evident. This disease is characterized by the loss of cartilage and the formation of new bone around the joint, which ends up generating pain and rendering the joint useless. On the other hand, osteoarthritis is degenerative and chronic in nature, which also involves the destruction of cartilage at a faster rate than the body can form it, and which is especially painful for the patient.
Good nutritional management of this arthropathy is important, since controlling excess weight, as the predominant disease in consultation, is one of the best treatment routes for different causes. The stress to which the joints are subjected in overweight or obese dogs accentuates the signs of discomfort and even behavioural changes (aggression, apathy, etc.) due to the pain it generates and the limitation of mobility. It also happens that fat perpetuates chronic inflammation; obesity, through the increase in adipose tissue, generates an increase in the production of pro-inflammatory mediators, so that these discomforts and consequences are aggravated.
The combination of ingredients allows the nutritional treatment of the disease to be addressed in a novel way, since the use of chondroprotectors (chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine) demonstrate in countless clinical reports their effectiveness in limiting synovitis and slowing the progression of the disease, promoting cartilage metabolism and inhibiting its loss.
