Hyperlipidemia
Hyperlipidemia, which is defined as the abnormally high presence of lipids in the blood serum or plasma, whether triglycerides (hypertriglyceridemia) or cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia) or both.
Diagnostic tests must be performed on an empty stomach, approximately 12 hours after meals, so that postprandial hyperlipidemia does not mislead. If a milky-looking serum is obtained, we must observe the serum concentration as an indicator of severity. From this point, the diagnosis of the cause is key, whether it is primary or secondary to other diseases such as diabetes, obesity, pancreatitis or hypothyroidism; if the latter is the case, we must treat this primary pathology and monitor its disappearance. If we find an obese specimen, it will be mandatory to use a diet like the one proposed, low in fat that allows weight loss.
It is important to understand that the presence of cholesterol and triglycerides in dogs and cats cannot be extrapolated to humans, they metabolize fats in a very different and more efficient way than in our case, so, although the diet is an effective control measure, it is not necessarily the cause, but it can be the solution. Common diseases in humans such as arteriosclerosis are directly related to diet but in cats they rarely occur or if they do, it is as a secondary disease to other diseases.
If no diseases that trigger the disease are found, it will be a primary hyperlipidemia, being able to differentiate 2 main types, idiopathic hypercholesterolemia and hereditary hyperchylomicronemia. For this type of hyperlipidemia, which in humans can lead to other secondary diseases such as pancreatitis and diabetes mellitus, although there is no evidence that this occurs in cats, the treatment will be purely dietary, with a low-fat diet, moderate protein content, although we will have to monitor the general condition of the cat, since in the case of hyperchylomicronemia, it is not rare to find this condition in animals that are not overweight, so we will have to provide sufficient calories for its correct maintenance.
Again, in cats there are not sufficient studies to endorse the benefit of probiotics, although again, their use suggests benefits in the control and reduction of serum lipids in non-obese humans with hyperlipidemia. Furthermore, since the related lipids are absorbed in the small intestine, they require interaction with bile acids, salts and enzymes, probiotic strains have shown multiple benefits for the digestive system, we will obtain benefits at this level.
Reduction of excess weight
If what concerns us is cat obesity, understood as the accumulation of fat in the animal until reaching more than 20% of the ideal weight,
we will be talking about one of the biggest problems that we can find in the clinic, being an almost endemic disease in our days.
Coexistence with man in small environments, with a sedentary lifestyle, excessively caloric and very palatable diets, loss of functionality of the cat, of its hunting behavior... are largely to blame for this disease having escalated in presence and importance if we value the loss of health and quality of life of the cat.
We must understand obesity as a key disease in the development of many other secondary diseases or as a relevant actor in the aggravation of existing ones such as: Diabetes Mellitus type II, hepatic lipidosis, heart disease, insulin resistance, lower urinary tract disease, joint complications, dermatitis ... That is, it is not a minor disease that does not deserve attention.
Weight gain begins when the caloric balance is positive, that is, more is ingested than is expended, knowing this we can act effectively to limit the appearance of overweight in the first place and obesity in the second case, in addition to its possible solution. We can find different conditions that favor its appearance, from the breed, in which the common European cat has a greater tendency to gain weight than other breeds; sterilization, which will require an adjustment in calorie intake since a sterilized cat will need around 20% less energy; Lack of physical activity, age and the use of inappropriate diets.
Weight loss in cats should occur gradually, rapid weight loss can lead to hepatic lipidosis, which is why veterinary control is important, which allows the objective to be achieved safely. Generally, weight loss through diet will be addressed by reducing fat
